The 60 Party "happened" in
an area situated in the northwestern part of Proud Lake State Recreation Area (a.k.a. Proud Lake Recreation Area), in the "Powers Camper Cabin" area, a very scenic part of the park. There are two small "camper cabins" in this area, both of which were rented for the party, to ensure we would have plenty of room to spread out (and not bother, or be bothered by, anyone). The camper cabins overlook a lake (long pond?) to the south that adjoins the "Convention" grounds (but not Proud Lake itself).
Proud Lake State Recreation Area (SRA) is located a couple miles
north of I-96, in Wixom. From the east, take exit 159, and go north along Wixom Road, which becomes North North Wixom Road. Wixom Road stops heading north at Glengary Road; turn left and stay on Wixom Road, until it turns north again [eventually becoming Duck Lake Road further north (at Sleeth)]. Before reaching Sleeth, turn left onto a Park access road, towards the "Powers Camper Cabin" area. The
Party "Convention" Site is south of the access road; watch for the cabins on the left, and just bear left until you see a large parking area (our
default parking area). [We were able to drive our coolers, etc., up towards/to the cabins (for drop off only though,
in most cases).]
DIRECTIONS
Proud Lake State Recreation Area is located north of I-96, in the Wixom area, nearest Exit 159. To get directons
on-line, you can reference the (following) address (Park Headquarters), where you can buy the "Recreation Pass" that will get you into any Michigan State Park (should be $11; bring cash). The address is
3500 Wixom Road, Commerce Township, MI 48382 (phone:
248-685-2433). The Ranger Station is actually
relatively near the party site. The party site is probably about a half mile northeast of the Park Headquarters. They are both off of Wixom Road, which goes north and south in that area (this road is also called Duck Lake Road to the north of the site, beyond Sleeth Road). After visiting the Park Headquarters, turn north on Wixom Road, pass Garden Road, then take a left on the next road (it is unnamed); you will see this sign on the NW corner of the intersection:
After turning left onto the unnamed road, on the left, you will see the "Powers Camper Cabins", where you can pull into the driveway and drop off (whatever you want), get "valet" assistance, park if necessary, etc. Here is what the signs at the driveway look like:
Please drop off coolers, food, tables/chaires, etc. here, but please don't block the road down to the right, down toward the rest room facilities.
Then, if you don't have trouble walking 3-4 minutes from the parking lot back to the party area, pull back onto the road, proceed west (left) and park at the 2nd parking lot winding around to the left.
Following are two maps of Proud Lake SRA, the second of which was marked up to help point you toward the party site. (Following those 2 are a few aerial photos to show you the party site and park areas, then 3 sets of maps and directions to get you to the Park Headquarters, which is maybe a half-mile SE of the party site, following those are several pictures of the site, park alcohol information (beer and wine are permitted), and information about the "Recreation Pass".)
Here is a version of the map pointing out the Headquarters (where you can buy the "Recreation Pass" sticker), and the party location.
Note crude arrows pointing to the roads, Park Headquarters, and Party Site. The arrow points to the "Powers Camper Cabins" portion of the party site, where you can stop and drop stuff off, on your left, on your way to park your vehicle, at the second lot on your left after passing the camper Cabins.
Here is an aerial view of the area that includes the 60 Party site... Note the two green-roofed cabins and the red-roofed shelter/rest room area, north of the lake/pond/river.
Restroom Info: The restroom is plumbed, and is handicap-ready. (It might be a bumpy ride to the restooms, if you have a wheelchair, but, once there, it is handicap-ready.)
You can click on the little map to the below right to go to the
MDNR website to get information about the Park. The Party will be held at the "Powers Camper Cabin(s)" area. It is located off the west side of Wixom Road/Duck Lake Road, between Wixom Road/Glengary Road (to the south) and Wixom Road/Sleeth Road (to the north), closer to Wixom Road/Sleeth Road than Wixom Road/Glengary Road. .
